Fortunate Son : Springsteen's Rendition RilesThe GOP!

Do you remember this song!

Credence Clear Water Revival: Fortunate Son

Of course, most of you do not remember what was once referred to as the Viet Nam song. If you recall the song, you know exactly why members of the US Congress and GOP aficionados are ballistic (a word they love so much) about Bruce Springsteen's choice of song during this weeks Veterans Day celebrations. (See MSNBC segment below)
The song is not only an anti-war song, it is clearly a some about US class-ism privilege. If you need an examples, how many members of the US Congress saw their kids go off to war in Viet Nam? Better example, how many of Mitt Romney's boys went off to war.
By contrast two Kennedy sons went off to war in World War II and only one came home. He came home and eventually became President John F. Kennedy. The Kennedy's were clear exception to commonly the commonly accepted norm of "Rich kids do not go off to war."
Fortunate Son is also a reminder of the US as a jingoist nation,  we seem to either relish war or we fulfill the international expectation of the US as the World Police. Alas, we have a military industrial foundation that will also lead to use of military force across the globe. As we move to a nation that appears to relish GOP governance, we must also remember John McCain, if elected in 2008, would have led the US in many wars (small, fleeting and possible opinion). Even if I went a nit hyperbolic on McCain and his lust for war, you must admit he has a major "woodie" for dropping bombs with associated troops on the ground.

McCain does not stand alone as a politician who would rather see bombs drop with deployment of US troops, his party is infested with elected officials of the same ilk.  If the prospect doesn't strike you as horrific, think about the US economy and the extent unfettered Bush wars (plus common GOP taxes cuts) laid the nation open to economic collapse.

Springsteen chose well.

Credence Clear Water Revival (partial lyrics)
Some folks are born made to wave the flag
They’re red, white and blue
And when the band plays “Hail to the Chief”
They point the cannon at you
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don’t they help themselves
But when the tax men come to the door
Lord, the house look a like a rummage sale
Yeah, some folks inherit star-spangled eyes
They send you down to war
And when you ask them, “How much should we give?”
They only answer, more, more, more
And the chorus:It ain’t me, it ain’t me
I ain’t no Senator’s son
It ain’t me, it ain’t me
I ain’t no fortunate one

When we elect people who have inclination towards stifling free expression if the expression is not in support of their agenda, you have elected an element of fascism.   Watch your GOP work to shape the nation in its likeness!
