Protest, The US Flag, And An Undesirable Confrontation

You nor I would step on the US flag. However, the flag is protest tool across the breadth of all US protests, if a protester wishes to use the flag as part of his/her exhibition. Unfortunately, such protest props have been adjudicate as legal, as undesirable as the abuse of the flag. The US Supreme Court, years ago, ruled on burning the flag in protest and the ruling seems to (like it or not) offer freedom to use the flag as the protester wishes.

The flag aside, there as to be a better way to express concern with how a protesters uses the flag than summarily grabbing the protester's flag and refusing to return it.

The following If You Only News piece shows that extent to which some Americans anoint themselves sheriff's with requisite power to rule over others.

While I personally may not have gone to "white privilege" in this case, I cannot criticize Only News's choice of title. Let's face it, we have seen enough heavy handedness from conservative Americans.  It wouldn't be advisable nor rational to eliminate News's title as far fetched.

A group of student protesters at Valdosta State University were denouncing racism on campus and allegedly stepping on a U.S. flag, when a woman decided she did not like what they were doing. Michelle Manhart, an Air Force veteran, took the flag away from them and would not let go, even when cops intervened.
This eventually led to her arrest, as can be seen in the below video. But, it took an awfully long time for that to happen. It even took four officers to subdue her. Some of the students noticed this preferential treatment but eventually police had no choice but to take her in since she absolutely would not comply with their requests to “let go of the flag.”
Since being posted online, conservatives everywhere are going bonkers that police decided to arrest her – instead of arresting the “black kids” for harming the national flag.  Apparently, Republicans think it’s okay to disregard police authority, so long as you’re white, and it’s done in the name of God and country, let alone against a bunch of “no-good blacks” protesting with a “torn flag.”
In fact, while it was reported that they were stepping on it, the video only shows Mrs. Manhart complaining of the flag being torn. When she is told it’s not her property, she asserts:
This flag actually belongs to the entire United States.
The Supreme Court has already ruled on this. This is protected speech under the First Amendment. Congress has tried for years to get a constitutional amendment passed in order to override the Supreme Court but has failed time and time again.
Still, Mrs. Manhart didn’t see things this way.
If your cause is racism then find some white people and walk on them. But, to walk on the flag is walking on our symbol of freedom. You have the freedom to do what you are doing because of it. I’m not fighting against them. I’m fighting against the way they are going about it.
She and her conservative supporters just don’t understand. Yes, it is a symbol of our freedom, but it is precisely this freedom that enables them to use their flag and protest in the way they see fit. You tried to rob them of this.
Turns out, while Mrs. Manhart was initially detained, the police did not press charges. Go figure.
Conservatives just can’t believe a white woman wasn’t allowed to take someone else’s property:

The incident could have ended in horror.

Would you like a bit more on this story? Apparently, The US flag heroin has also desecrated the US Flag. The action she undertook with the US Flag was a far cry different than the protest she so willingly disrupted. If the following image accurately depicts the Air Force Vet, her actions we ..well....lewd.
