"Playing With Fire":... Racism Is Infectious And We Are All Potential Victims! (VIDEO)

Do you want to view additional validation of why I chose MSNBC News and current event coverage over Fox News (not even an issue) and CNN?  Rachel Maddow broadcast a segment yesterday which provides a view of a cancer growing and metastasizing in our society: Racism. The segment is heavily influenced by stellar reporting at the British Broadcast Corp. (BBC) and the Wall Street Journal.

Allow me to state a critical trait I incorporated while growing to adulthood.  A belief system and trait which have paid-off  in many ways.
A person can think whatever they wish. They can harbor all sorts of beliefs, they can even think in harmful ways towards others; that is their prerogative and their right. When the person acts out to harm others from the deep recessions of their belief system, behavior manifest ,which is unacceptable.
Another critical lesson in life.  If we as bystanders and observers do not perform acts to extinguish wrongful acts, we are effectively enablers.  If someone whispers the "N" Word, whispers the "F" Word, whispers the "B" (bitch) Word, whispers the "S" Word (derogatory for Spanish in origin)  to you and you are even neutral to their actions you have factually enabled the person to take the vile act forward. Unless you agree, how hard is it to say, "I don't go there," " I don't care for that word," or "Please do say such to me!" I call the responses "extinguishing responses."  If extinguishing responses are not fed back to perpetrators of racism, they feed off your unspoken affirmation and they grow.

Of course, we know bigotry and racism are not passed on through generations via DNA. They are learned psychological states and they are deleterious to anyone who grows from early childhood to adulthood with the burden of such a mindset.

While millions harbor such beliefs, most do not act on that which was (or is) handed to them via parents and family and reinforced via social interactions (schools, friends, loved ones). I recall a few examples of people who have intimated they worked in concerted manner to "check", place in perspective and work to rid themselves of bigotry and racism. Those people were proud of their journey and did not hesitate to speak their epiphany.

Obviously,  there are millions upon millions who have grown to avoid the stifling effects of being taught to hate based on race, sexual orientation, religion and a forms of bigotry. We are a richer world because of those who have traveled the journey to "tolerance, diversity and inclusivity." Yet, we are increasingly reminded of the scope and depths of pure racism.

There was a time 40 to 50 years ago when overt acts of racism were so frowned-upon. Perpetrators would dare not go public with their exhibitions, whispers among friends, condemnation within the confines of the family home, and covert racism in the workplace. All such acts were for the most part hidden and viewed as unacceptable. Since the early 1980s the US has gone full circle from a place with successful experimentation in tolerance, and shunning our Jim Crow past, to a society of a re-birth of life before the late 1960s.

From the birth insemination Harry Shuler Dent, Sr.'s,  Republican Southern Strategist (for Strum Thurman, Barry Goldwater and Richard Nixon), to Richard Nixon's Kevin Phillips and nurturing to full blown political doctrine via Ronald Reagan's Lee Atwater, we now have fully developed overt racism in every facet of life in the United States.

Architects of a strategy gone wild and framed with overt racism: The GOP Southern Strategy.

We at the TPI have devoted many hours and much web-space to GOP strategy and its core constituency our Southern States and Plains States. There are professionals who through tedious work, diligent research, and competent journalism that when bundled is fair and open reporting. There work often show how the roots of modern racism have led to unbelievably horrific cases of racism gone mad.  Roots of modern racism with undeniable fissures into GOP politics, GOP influencing minds and GOP elections strategy.

Rachel Maddow's August 6th, 2013 segment. The segment is a full 15 minutes long, but if you have an interest in information with a strong message stick with the piece. CNN was once noted for such segments; well before politics and their quest to upend Fox News became a business model.

"Playing With Fire"

Do you see how the web of hatred spreads?

From a senseless racist killing in the 1990s to the very killers who planted bombs at the Boston Marathon.  Ah,  you may not be black, but you night have sat innocently close to the very bomb the LEGAL Immigrant bomber planted.

The cancer is far more inbred than you realize.

People of questionable intellect and nefarious motives may have reached back into our past and touched America at the Boston Marathon.

The mother may have via her work assisted in her son reaching back into our horrific past for similar acts. And, the seeds of racism reached form a 1990s military and resulted in death at a Sikh Temple.

Voter Suppression as GOP as American Apple Pie

Despite one's political and social inclinations, I think it irrefutable the GOP is very much about winning elections without regard for decency, honesty, and respect for American voters. From Lee Atwater "Southern Strategy" (see below Atwater). A quick review of the Atwater embed will reveal the earliest stages of lingering race baiting tactics (e.g. food stamps code).

While Atwater's "in-your-face' tactics linger, the GOP has metastasized to a political house of horrors. A political house replete with outright suppression of the constitutional right (and hard won via sacrifice for women and African-American) voting blocs.

Voter suppression is an obvious 'high-level' strategy from the GOP.  It is based in the most heinous of Un-Americanism one can imagine.  Suppression by design restricts voting access for minority voters, college students, women voters and the elderly. Recognize any Democrat voting blocs? If find the later group ( the elderly)  intriguing as America's 'senior' voters are historically GOP voters (an exception for most senior African-American voters). Modern-day suppression is little different from past 'poll taxes', literacy tests' and, frankly, outright voter intimidation. It is a tactic born of the election of Barack H. Obama as the 44th President of the United States of America.

Under the guise of eliminating voter fraud, the tactic has become widespread in many states

GOP Voter Suppression has evolved to the current level of 'expert'.  Dick Armey and the Koch Brothers funded raw campaign against democrats, the president and the nation won majorities in federal and state governments. Upon, arrival legislators discarded the winning "Jobs, Jobs, Jobs' mantra with strategic and unadulterated policies based in regressivism.

In 2007 The New York Times reported on Bush Administration efforts to crack down on voter fraud.

In April 2007, The New York Times reported.
WASHINGTON, April 11 — Five years after the Bush administration began a crackdown on voter fraud, the Justice Department has turned up virtually no evidence of any organized effort to skew federal elections, according to court records and interviews.
......A federal panel, the Election Assistance Commission, reported last year that the pervasiveness of fraud was debatable. That conclusion played down findings of the consultants who said there was little evidence of it across the country, according to a review of the original report by The New York Times that was reported on Wednesday.
Mistakes and lapses in enforcing voting and registration rules routinely occur in elections, allowing thousands of ineligible voters to go to the polls. But the federal cases provide little evidence of widespread, organized fraud, prosecutors and election law experts said.
“There was nothing that we uncovered that suggested some sort of concerted effort to tilt the election,” Richard G. Frohling, an assistant United States attorney in Milwaukee, said.

Bush ordered a investigation into voter fraud.  Obviously,  as far back as 2000 there wasn't enough voter fraud to ward-off Bush's Supreme Court selection to the Presidency.

Southern Strategy and Gingrich: Win in South Carolina!

Illustration source reveal at end of this article

A headline capture from a Facebook feed.

BREAKING: Mitt Romney loses the South Carolina primary after enjoying a nearly 20-point lead over Newt Gingrich in the state.

I am amazed there is even a story a circumscribed premise the headline sentence.  Did we witness a candidate win a primary in the heart of the GOP South?  Did we not hear the audacious Juan Williams (A black man) 'dare' bring-up matters on Gingrich's  'southern strategy' at one of this week's debates?  Did we not  have John, CNN, King, throw Gingrich a softball question that even I could have hit a 'grand-slam' base clearing home run?  I mean really to start a debate with a question about a GOP candidate's promiscuous past?   King really should hide his face in shame, but then what would one expect from a conservative CNN commentator. King knew exactly what he was doing and he accomplished his mission with the skill of an agenda driven conservative. And, he did so in a superior manner than any of the 'bobbing-heads' evening show personalities over at Fox News.

So, two conservative members of the media provide a 'rhetoric' platform for Gingrich who is clearly playing the race card in a region of the country where it, unfortunately, still works.  Alas, the "southern strategy" lives! IT'S ALIVE! Alive as surely as did Dr. Frankenstein bring his monster to life (only to be eventually killed by his subject).

The "southern strategy," how did it come about?  A brief probe revealed it roots in the Nixon quest for the Oval Office, through Reagan's capture of 1980s federal governance to the Karl Rovian success with George W. Bush.  As you read the last sentence did you notice anything that made you wonder a bit about the ultimate outcome of the "southern strategy"?

During the heated confrontations over the Civil Rights and Voting rights Acts, the dismantling of Jim Crowe and the after of LBJ's Great Society, people such as Harry S. Dent, Sr. leveraged regional resentment and hatred into a formidable (regionalpolitical force.

George Tames/The New York Times
Harry Dent in 1969 with President Richard M. Nixon, back turned, and Representative George Bush.
Harry S. Dent was to Richard Nixon what Lee Atwater become for Ronald Reagan.  Both men are the "Fathers of the "Southern  Strategy": A political force comparable to some aspects of Hitlerian strategies for Germany in the mid to late 1930s.

The "political force" lives today. The 2012 GOP campaign has shown a willingness of Santorum, Gingrich and a segment of Ron Paul's supporters (not Paul per se), to use the strategy. The problem is, 1968 was a Jurassic Era compared to today's availability of information, instant access to information,  and an ability to share said information.

While the 'southern strategy' may have roots that pre-date Lee Atwater's "coming to Washington D.C.," those roots withered to almost nil until Atwater resuscitated its vile and deceitful tenets.

A bit of history on Mr. Atwater from WIKI....
