American Totalitarianism?

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out
— Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out
— Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out
— Because I was not a Jew.
Martin Niemöller (1893-1984) was a German Protestant who spent seven years in Nazi concentration camps for opposing the religious policies of Hitler. After the war, he became a prominent member of the Peace Movement. He achieved renown for his poem 'First they came for the Communists…'

The ugly manifestations of authoritarianism and its bundled subsets.

No one better than Newt Gingrich for embodying the essence of modern Republicanism. Recall his wife was given he glamorous and cushy job of Ambassador to the Vatican.

The wondering Trump demagogue stated:
“Let me be as blunt and direct as I can be. Western civilization is in a war. We should frankly test every person here who is of a Muslim background, and if they believe in sharia, they should be deported,” Gingrich said on Fox News. “Sharia is incompatible with Western civilization. Modern Muslims who have given up Sharia—glad to have them as citizens. Perfectly happy to have them next door.”
Gingrich is one Trump demagogue, yet he as an individual pales when compared with what seems a GOP core value with fissures in whiter nationalism and bold racism. The GOP has its racist flag wavers such as Steve King of Iowa. But, we suggest much deeper scrutiny of what the Party on the Right has come to via evolution post-Ronald Reagan's open racists Southern Strategy politics.

Example.  How often have we heard or read defective strategy from the GOP which clearly intended to mirror reflect the actions of the party? Trump consistently overuses the strategy, a method of mind shaping which spans back to other totalitarian leaders in modern history.

Before the Atlantic piece, allow a couple of comments about two article headings.

A. "Aryanization"

While well over the of the nation refuse to accept obvious white nationalism and racism deeply inbred in the current GOP, the facts support clear core values of distrust and aversions to all things nonwhite with extreme denizens who openly practice racism and anti-Semitism. One such purveyor of such nationalism was once employed in the White House and served as a chief adviser to Trump.

On a more street level, we are seeing groups like the Proud Boys, the so-called (white racists) Alt-right, and various splinter organizations with goals embed in white supremacy.

B. The Propaganda Ministry and the Reich Press Chamber

The one is simple and quick: Fox News, Steve Miler, Spencer Media, and a former Fox News head on the big-wig in the White House communications Dept.

The dangers inherent in Trumpism far exceed Trump himself and his inner cabal. The danger is the American electorate; people who refused to vote in 2016 and people who actually voted for Trump. In other cases, a sorry lot of low information celebrity worshippers who probably serve as Trump's: a sucker is born every minute.

Yale Professor Timothy Snyder recently supported his case regarding Trumpism close resemblance to Germany 1926 - 1945.

Establishing Control of the Press

When Adolf Hitler took power in 1933, the Nazis controlled less than three percent of Germany’s 4,700 papers.
The elimination of the German multi-party political system brought about the demise of hundreds of newspapers produced by outlawed political parties. It also allowed the state to seize the printing plants and equipment of the Communist and Social Democratic Parties, which were often turned over directly to the Nazi Party. In the following months, the Nazis established control or exerted influence over independent press organs.
During the first weeks of 1933, the Nazi regime deployed the radio, press, and newsreels to stoke fears of a pending “Communist uprising,” then channeled popular anxieties into political measures that eradicated civil liberties and democracy. SA (Storm Troopers) and members of the Nazi elite paramilitary formation, the SS, took to the streets to brutalize or arrest political opponents and incarcerate them in hastily established detention centers and concentration camps. Nazi thugs broke into opposing political party offices, destroying printing presses and newspapers.
Sometimes using holding companies to disguise new ownership, executives of the Nazi Party-owned publishing house, Franz Eher, established a huge empire that drove out competition and purchased newspapers at below-market prices. Some independent newspapers, particularly conservative newspapers and non-political illustrated weeklies, accommodated to the regime through self-censorship or initiative in dealing with approved topics.

Through measures to “Aryanize” businesses, the regime also assumed control of Jewish-owned publishing companies, notably Ullstein and Mosse.
Ullstein, which published the well-known Berlin daily the Vossische Zeitung, was the largest publishing house company in Europe by 1933, employing 10,000 people. In 1933, German officials forced the Ullstein family to resign from the board of the company and, a year later, to sell the company assets.
Owners of a worldwide advertising agency, the Mosse family owned and published a number of major liberal papers much hated by the Nazis, including the Berlin Tageblatt; the Mosse family fled Germany the day after Hitler took power. Fearing imprisonment or death, reputable journalists also began to flee the country in large numbers. German non-Jewish newspaper owners replaced them in part with ill-trained and inexperienced amateurs loyal to the Nazi Party, as well as with skilled and veteran journalists prepared to collaborate with the regime in order to maintain and even enhance their careers.

The Propaganda Ministry and the Reich Press Chamber

The Propaganda Ministry, through its Reich Press Chamber, assumed control over the Reich Association of the German Press, the guild which regulated entry into the profession. Under the new Editors Law of October 4, 1933, the association kept registries of “racially pure” editors and journalists, and excluded Jews and those married to Jews from the profession. Propaganda Ministry officials expected editors and journalists, who had to register with the Reich Press Chamber to work in the field, to follow the mandates and instructions handed down by the ministry. In paragraph 14 of the law, the regime required editors to omit anything “calculated to weaken the strength of the Reich abroad or at home.”
The Propaganda Ministry aimed further to control the content of news and editorial pages through directives distributed in daily conferences in Berlin and transmitted via the Nazi Party propaganda offices to regional or local papers. Detailed guidelines stated what stories could or could not be reported and how to report the news. Journalists or editors who failed to follow these instructions could be fired or, if believed to be acting with intent to harm Germany, sent to a concentration camp. Rather than suppressing news, the Nazi propaganda apparatus instead sought to tightly control its flow and interpretation and to deny access to alternative sources of news.

Toward the End of World War II

By 1944, a shortage of newspaper and ink forced the Nazi government to limit all newspapers first to eight, then four, and finally, two pages. Of the 4,700 newspapers published in Germany when the Nazis took power in 1933, no more that 1,100 remained. Approximately half were still in the hands of private or institutional owners, but these newspapers operated in strict compliance with government press laws and published material only in accordance with directives issued by the Ministry of Propaganda. While the circulation of these newspapers was approximately 4.4 million, the circulation of the 325 newspapers and their multiple regional editions owned by the Nazi Party was 21 million. Many of these newspapers continued to publish until the end of the war.
Upon occupying Germany, Allied authorities shut down and confiscated presses owned by Nazi Party organs. The last surviving German radio station, located in Flensberg, near the Danish border, made its final broadcast in the name of the National Socialist state on May 9, 1945. After reporting the news of the unconditional capitulation of German forces to the Allies, it went off the air.

After the War

In the postwar US occupation zone of Germany, the military administration believed that the reestablishment of a free press was vital to the denazification and reeducation of Germans, and essential to the creation of democracy in Germany. Therefore, the first German newspaper approved for publication by the US military high command appeared on January 24, 1945, in Aachen, three months after the US forces captured the city.
Among those tried by the Allies as major war criminals at the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg were Hans Fritzsche, head of the Radio Division of the Propaganda Ministry, and Julius Streicher, editor of Der Stürmer.

Trumps Media Attacks (Familiar)

Image result for goebbels the press

Image result for goebbels the press

If you consider all of the preceding images, reflect on the path Donald Trump is following via is increasing attacks on US Media (press). Is it possible to imagine the United States with media and press which only reported favorably in all cases? Would that constitute anything other than state-sanctioned media such as Russia Today (RT)?

As a reminder media has reported past cases of Russian journalist dying in unexplanled circumstances.

Now for a bit of Trump this week.

The Fake News is working overtime. Just reported that, despite the tremendous success we are having with the economy & all things else, 91% of the Network News about me is negative (Fake). Why do we work so hard in working with the media when it is corrupt? Take away credentials?
Later in the day, Trump's offical Press Secretary fulfilled her role as the naiton's leading presstittue with an inane resonse when asked about Trump;s tweet.

Trump's attacks on the media and print media (with an exclusion for outlets which offer unfettered support) is as dangerous as censorship of cisitzens.

A late night CNN Segment pretty much sums-up Trump's press/media attacks while clearly make the very same point we made above.

Trumpism: A Strategy Regarding Trump Lying (Ignore it?)

CNN will on occasion flash a segment with a known Trumpite: Matt Schlapp. For years I assumed Schlapp was or is a paid contributor as he fits the CNN broadcast model like a tight tee shirt. A contributor from the Left; a contributor from the Right...two minutes of overripe partisan comments with an occasional infusion from a host.

Schlapp a few other Right wig talking heads ake for intriguing and simultaneous disgust dialog with pure devotion to anything Trump. The CNN right-wingers are intelligent people; they are not mildness red cap wearing placard waving Trump heads. They earn handsomely while receiving a paycheck from CNN while spewing daily talking points for the White House

Talking Points is a strategic tool the GOP has honed into a fine-tuned communications and propaganda weapon. Schlapp is one of the very best at wrinkling his brow and delivering the points like a real trooper.  Today the White House strategy took an interesting, telling and shameful turn. Schlapp actually mentioned media shouldn't call out Trump for his daily lies.  Watch (two minutes).

Schlapp would have the nation ignore the reality of a president whose first thought is to tell a lie It is mentally and physically impossible to avoid consideration of the person as a pathological liar when the number of lies reaches a point of 84% untrue (in some degree). He would suggest that media overlook the most serious of Trump's character traits: the lie.

Would Schlapp have it as did Joseph Goebbels and Hitler in the mid-1920s? Schlapp is crtianly not a fire breathing Nazi, but his message is without question outsdie the relam of democracy and a free press.

Does the White House actually believe a major of Americans will join Trump's millions via fully supporting any and all utterances from Trump's brain and mouth? Is it possible Trump's propaganda cadre believes the media (press) is in total their national Sinclair Broadcasting/Fox News?

Examples of Trump's utterances during his Michigan rally were capture by Chris Cillizza and published on CNN Politics. Linked here.

If you have a few more minutes watch a CNN segment with another well known Trumpite Jason Miller. The early morning segment relates to the weekend White Huse Correspondent's Dinner and the Rights chagrin for jokes and roasting against Trump staffers. The final minutes of the nine-minute segment is key.

As I finished the Navarro/Miller CNN segment I found myself re-reading the Joseph Goebbels quotes.

Trump's "Fake News": FOXPEN (Fox Propaganda and Entertainment Network); Watching Kushner

Last night, while avoiding his failed First 100 Days, Trump avoided appearing at the Washington Correspondents Dinner. He literally ran off to Pennsylvania and hosted a crowd of supporters and deplorable(s). Yes, the crowd included deplorable people who continue to yell "Lock her up" (in reference to Clinton's email issues) while Trump's managers spend hours each day working to ward-off a Russian/Trump electoral scandal which on a daily basis is reaching deeper into the White House. He ran off to a safe audience and continued spewing lie after lie to people who do no are about being lied to as much as they drink water or consume food. Actually, many in the crowd seemed to relish Trump's platform oratory (replete with lies and inept reading from a teleprompter) on an equal level to their physical need for food and water. Let's face it they must regular feed their right-wing paradigm; hence, the success of Fox News.

One such very obvious lie was Trump's rant about filling campaign promises.

Miami CBS local affiliate

“We are keeping one promise after another and the people are really happy about it,” Trump said to the crowd.
The enthusiastic crowd cheered familiar themes from the president.

“Media outlets like CNN and MSNBC are fake news,” he said.
Yes, of course, promise after promise fulfilled.  Trump is a small man in a job which is far too big for him. He has, in the past likened himself to Superman (if he fulfills his promises), well Harwood says it best.

Noted journalist and opinion writer, John Harwood, should get full credit for keyboarding the quote of the week.

....Candidate Trump also insisted that, by force of his negotiating skill, he could fulfill those vows quickly where predecessors had failed. When I reminded him in a Speakeasy interview that America doesn't have Superman presidents, he replied jauntily: "You will if you have Trump. You watch."
If his first 100 days have made anything clear it is this: That wasn't true.
In the Oval Office, in fact, Trump looks less like Superman and more like Professor Marvel in that "Wizard of Oz" scene when Dorothy peers behind the curtain to see that Oz isn't so great and powerful after all. Trump is a talented salesman with the world's biggest microphone, but he has no experience making government work and precious few aides to help him learn how.
What happens when an egomaniacal billionaire wins an election to the US Presidency while leaving a clear path of lies, politicking promises and flat-out political manipulation? What happens?

Trump was assessed by credible not having the wherewithal for the US presidency. "Wherewithal" is a unique and often strategic used word to denote a few human traits the person either possesses to a great degree, has to possess to achieve success or the person traits the person fails to possess (e.g., Cognitive acumen, an ability to accomplish tasks [skills], competence in achieving goals).

Propaganda ensues. The President and his handlers operate from a total platform of working to promulgate the false reality of a successful first 100 Days in the White House. And, the strategy works well with people who live in safe little bubbles while harboring no interest in what takes place outside of that bubble. As long as what happens doesn't reach into their safe space, they are happy Americans. It also works among people who are gullible to the more, or with people who so consume themselves with worshipping stars and celebrities, the purveyor of the propaganda has an ease mission.

Trump is the classic example, surpassed only by few in the history humankind. Two such benefactors of mind shaping propaganda come to mind: Adolf Hitler and a much more nascent benefactor: Donald Trump. Neither of whom could have successfully reached the level of leaders of nations without dedicated, competent and loyal information ministers;(with skilled support organizations).

The Trump misinformation campaign continues at this very minute. We find a more validating example via depiction of Hitler's Minister of Communication (and propaganda).

A lie told once remains a lie but a lie told a thousand times becomes the truth - Joseph Goebbels

Trump has a few such purveyors of lies and misinformation. Not one, however, surpassed the breadth and scope of FOXPEN (Fox Entertainment And Propaganda Network). Hugh Hewitt, Mark Levine, Rush Limbaugh, Hannity and Tucker Carlson have their place in Trump's misinformation machine, but Fox News stands atop the pack like excrement above the water level in the toilet.

Trump's propagandist cable news network, Fox News, recently aired what has to be the most insulting set of graphics outside of a presentation of a poor cartoon.  While Trump supporters and the majority of Fox News viewers may have absorbed the misleading graphics, rational Americans can see through the propaganda.  In fact, I don't even believe Joseph Goebbels would have lowered his craft to the gauche level of what follows.

While airing "fake news" graphics of comparisons of Trump's first 100 days in office to other presidents network producers and developers came up with the following. We have intermixed two Fox graphics with charts which directly refute Fox News misleading presentation. Basically, Fox leveraged real numbers without proper recognition of the economic abyss of the final year of Bush Administration.

First, a comparison graphic of the US Dow Jones Industrial Average performance during times of economic strife. A close review of the chart shows the Obama Administration reverse the ravages of a deep recession over a much short time period than the lingering comparisons of the late 1930s recession. The red trend lines embarked on a sharp upward trend while the comparison period experienced a roller coaster-like downward spiral.

The first Fox graphic represents a visual representation of unemployment data which really shouldn't be used if producers valued accuracy in reporting.  Trump's time in the Oval Office is within a period of economic performance (recovery) derived by Obama Administration policies. The US unemployment rate moved for Bush up to very close to 10 percent and was lowered via job creation during Obama's last six years to below five percent.

Use of the graphic also allows Fox mind-shapers to manipulate the visual without any reference to the Obama Stimulus which contributed to the sharp decline in the red trend line.

Jobless rate after first 3 months: Trump vs. Obama vs. Bush vs. Clinton.
4:34 PM - 29 Apr 2017

You might notice two very important aspects of the chart below. The charted years of 2008/2009 are stark in the depiction of the Obama Stimulus and its almost immediate counter to the Bush's economic hemorrhaging. The opposite side of the chart offers the stark reality of the state of unemployment as Trump came to his decisions to seek the 2016 GOP nomination.

Fox producers took their propaganda a step further.  The second chart below illustrates the reality of Obama's first 100 days as a mission to reduce the loss of jobs at the end of the Bush years. Remember, we saw months of jobs losses from 450,000 to 800,000 job losses per month.

The watching Eyes Of Kushner

Let's foray into another Trump dynamic for a moment.  Have ever noticed the extent to which his son-in-law maintains almost constant eye contact?

I once watched and heard Rachel Maddow comment about the appearance of Trump's ever present son-in-law while Trump's Mar-A-Lago party group (cabinet) sat in a temporary situation room to review the aftermath of Trump's 59 Cruise missile (in honor of Assad and Putin) fireworks show on an emptied Syrian air base. Maddow's take on the Kushner gaze in the large image below was something akin to young guy worship, reverence for the billionaire, or maybe a form of sucking up or reverence based interaction with his father-in-law.

While neither Maddow, her team, nor I am experts in human behavior, I find a few images of Kushner behold his father- in-law not so base in reverence. It seems Kushner seems to watch Trump so closely the possibility of necessary scrutiny should also be on the table. Is Kushner watching Trump so closely due to the families knowledge the aged Trump needs close scrutiny? While purely conjecture, does the son-in-law know or recognizes signs of Trump's behavior which may denote a less than stable state (albeit temporary)?
