Honoring Our Past Protectors

National Anthem at Arlington National Cemetery Memorial Day is a somber remembrance ceremony. Do you think someone in the White House could have told 45 his Don King (former boxing promoter) like fake reverence for the cameras should have been avoided?

The Meaning of the Fourth of July

First a word about Memorial Day.....


After researching and writing about the origin of  Memorial Day, I will admit to finding historical origins to national holidays has turned into a fascination for me.  

My knowledge of the origin of Memorial Day escaped me through the entirety of my life. An astounding fact for one who prides himself in absorbing as much information as the 24 hour day permits.  

I was astounded to find that Memorial Day was first celebrated as former slaves visited a southern grave yard to honor Union soldiers who died fighting in the Civil War. The day was first called Decoration Day as the former slaves took items to the grave yard to make the graves look more attractive and befitting the honors of the died soldiers.  The Progressive Influence (linked article) The First Memorial Day (dead Union soldiers honored by freed slaves)

The Origin of the Fourth of July far supersedes Decoration Day, but I it may not supersede relative to actual celebration.  The history is not at my fingertips, but I doubt the national celebration was formally established prior to the Civil War ending Decoration Day, or, I should say not the level of celebration we experience over the past 200 hundred years.
