A US Congress On A Social Mission (The Ugly, The Sad and The Pathetic)

A lament from friend of the TPI: Mike Victor

The Republican Party in the Boehner era has had little understanding of economic or political facts, and it will probably get worse.
GOOGLE.COM|BY PAUL KRUGMAN

I have never seen anything like this. I read of the decades before the civil war when senators caned each other viciously and many carried weapons as civility and a sense of common purpose completely broke down. But nothing else comes close.

The strange thing is that there is no single divisive issue such as slavery to excuse the GOP's extraordinary obstructionism and opposition to anything the president does. Healthcare reform is in reality a dry, boring accounting matter, and there has been no push whatsoever to impose stricter gun legislation much less the wholesale confiscation the far right has been predicting since January 2009. No wars were started (in fact two were ended) and the rise of ISIS and tragedy in Syria seems related to decisions Obama's predecessor made in March, 2003. The economy is going strong, unemployment was halved, the stock market tripled, Osama bin Laden dead. We just knocked out a historic deal to insure Iran doesn't get a nuke. Gay marriage is not just legal but no longer an issue among the vast majority of Americans.

Taxes remain low, the size of government smaller than when Obama took office.

So why all the outrage? Given the absurd attempts to milk every IRS audit of a tea party group posing as a charitable organization into a scandal or the tragic death of an ambassador in newly liberated but dangerously unstable Libya as a dark conspiracy involving murder, we are once again left with the only tenable explanation: nothing infuriates  far right  whites more than seeing a black man succeed where his white predecessor failed so badly.

It's the only way this disproportionate fury makes sense. Obama or anyone who looks like him will never be legitimate in certain white rural counties in the southern gun belt or the vast plains (states) fly over country. It's sad, but it seems the truth.

We have work to do.

GOP Sabotage of the Obama Administration, thus the country?

Is it possible Democrats in Congress are truly naive, or do they practice a form of congressional protocol endemic only on the Left?  Naivety in Washington DC is not the domain of Congress, even the rookie Tea Party infestation.  Naivety in DC is only the domain of the newly elected president; and it happens with each newly inaugurated winner of the Oval Office.  How can top Democrats in Congress finally speak about "possible sabotaging the economy' for sake of working against President Obama? Democratic Members of the House and the Senate are not naive!

Did they ignore McConnell's declaration of his single most mission was to ensure Obama is a one-term president?

Therefore, we can only assume the recent article from the Huffington Post is either political posturing or a very belated effort to awaken people to the level of underhanded obstructionism practiced by the GOP. In either case the DEMs are far too 'nice' and probably follow congressional protocol while the party on the Right is both out-of-control and harmful to the well-being of the nation.

Huff Post- POLITICS published the followup.
Top Democrats Suspect Republicans Try To Sabotage Economy To Hurt Obama

By CHARLES BABINGTON, ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON -- Are Republican lawmakers deliberately stalling the economic recovery to hurt President Barack Obama's re-election chances? Some top Democrats say yes, pointing to GOP stances on the debt limit and other issues that they claim are causing unnecessary economic anxiety and retarding growth.

The latest Democratic complaint came after House Speaker John Boehner said Tuesday that when Congress raises the nation's borrowing cap in early 2013, he will again insist on big spending cuts to offset the increase. Boehner, R-Ohio, continues to reject higher tax rates, which Democrats demand from the wealthy.

That led Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to say Boehner is virtually assuring another debt-ceiling crisis as bad or worse than the one that shook financial markets nine months ago.

Excerpt

"The last thing the country needs is a rerun of last summer's debacle that nearly brought down our economy," Schumer said.

Boehner responded in a statement: "Republicans have passed nearly 30 bills that would help small businesses create jobs and we are waiting on Senate Democrats to vote on these common-sense measures. The failure to act on these jobs bills, as well as our crushing debt burden, is undermining economic growth and job creation."

Democrats say Republicans loaded their jobs bills with provisions certain to doom them in the Senate, such as restrictions on unions and on regulatory agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency.

Why are top Dems just now calling-out the Obstructionist?  Did it take Boehner again following the GOP party-line of obstructionism and attacking human service agencies to garner an election years response?  How about the current GOP efforts at backing-down form last years budget/deficit agreements?  Is there a degree of truth in the 'softness'of the Left?

Boehner draws the line on the debt-ceiling!  Boehner drew the same line last year and ended with egg all over his face while sitting on camera proclaiming, he got 99% of what he wanted.  We did the bidding of the infectious Tea Party in their quest to 'shut-down the federal government and delivering a credit rating drop from Triple A.

So,  politics is politics. US politics also carries a heavy does of social division along with political discord.  Should we allow any party to so clearly work against improving the US economy for sake of winning the White House?  The extent to which the Right and Left are divided to the detriment of the nation is simultaneously tragic and shameful. If we continue to remain powerless while the 'uber' wealthy building a plutocratic oligarchy, we are doing so at our expense.

Those in Congress who are obstructing movement of the nation forward are wealthy people, and in many cases their very obstruction garners (financial) favor from 'uber' wealthy far-right conservatives who want to shape the nation as something akin to the book series and the movie "The Hunger Game".

Personally, I will not tuck my shirt-tail in for proper display (human sacrifice) for the powerful and their games!

"Obamacons" turn back to Republicans?????

Exactly what is a Obamacon"?  Reuters has published an article that on its surface seems to serve as some sort of prelude to President Obama's Electoral doom.  Obamacons?
Reuters.....
Known as "Obamacons," moderate Republicans helped make the Democrat's case in 2008 that he was a new breed of "post-partisan" politician who would work with both parties. Obama's youth and the narrative of electing the first black president also attracted Republicans to make a rare show of support for a Democratic candidate.
"They were actually drawn to the sense of hope that he represented. They also liked the fact that he was black," said David Gergen, who has served as an advisor to Republican and Democratic presidents.
Perhaps the most famous Obamacon was former Secretary of State Colin Powell, whose endorsement of Obama shortly before Election Day was a turning point in the 2008 campaign. Powell's staff says he has not decided who to support in 2012.
I believe the Reuter's writer's comments are somewhat factual and even more interesting. Interesting, from the perspective that people really do not factor-in the horrible opponents that candidate Obama ran against in 2007/2008.  How about a few words in acknowledgement that McCain/Palin was a ticket doomed to failure from the moment that McCain was given the nomination? When the GOP added Palin to the ticket, it gave a temporary uplift; the party had stepped way outside of this political model and nominated a woman as Vice President.   The political rise was thoroughly  surpassed by a historical political decent as Palin showed the extent that she  was not ready
for  national office.

Boehner's Swan Song!

"Tax Increases are off the table"!

CNN Money is reporting Boehner's on- camera remarks to the super committee.

WASHINGTON (CNNMoney) -- House Speaker John Boehner drew a line in the sand on taxes on Thursday, saying that a special debt committee tasked with cutting at least $1.2 trillion from federal deficits shouldn't consider tax hikes.
"Tax increases, I think, are off the table," Boehner said in a speech to the Economic Club of Washington, D.C. "It's a very simple equation. Tax increases destroy jobs. And the Joint Committee is a jobs committee. Its mission is to reduce the deficit that is threatening job creation in our country."

Congress Returns..... Obstructionism or Cooperation?

After five-weeks of summer fun outside of the   Capital Building  and Washington D.C. our 112th Congress and the U.S. Senate are due back on the job, starting Tuesday of next week.

I can remember the summer of 2009, and the hell reaped upon Democrats as they broke while President Obama's health care reform bill was moving towards  a vote.

Many older district constituents reacted to Right-wing  propaganda and followed the lead of experienced 'RIGHTS Principles' instigators to make each Democratic town-hall a horrible experience.  The cameras rolled, the old folks railed, some fought,  security escorted some from the meetings; the message clear, "...leave our health-care alone". I remember overwhelming anger that Freedom Works would   actually publish and distribute The Rights Principles:  instructions on how to disrupt the free flow of information.   My anger subsided equally quickly as I thought about how the RIGHT has manipulated  voters of this nation since well before the fiery politics of the 1970s and 1980s.
