Peggy Noonan's Obama Derangement Takes A Silly Turn

We are going to explore and probe recent comments from Peggy Noonan (introduced below). Noonan recently criticized President Obama's relaxed appearance (without suit coat) as he commented about the silliness and sadness of the GOP, specifically the GOP dominated House of OZ. Noonan's criticism was both hypocritical and phony as she attempted to force her view of the world and personal paradigm onto President Obama.

Peggy Noonan, WSJ editorial writer-staff,  is the most pompous Right-wing pundit/operative regularly broadcast on The Sunday morning  (conservative news shows).  She is a non-verbal nightmare, or should I say a non-verbal horror show caricature. Noonan reminds of the person you sometimes run into, exchange greeting pleasantries, and within 30 seconds you realize, "....ooh this person is communication embarrassment...." The person is like a talking mime who has not lost all of the exaggerated physical movements and you cannot get away from the person soon enough.

While there are many examples of over-exaggerated elitist (tea tipper) non verbals, we located a few link critiques of Noonan's punditry from a May 2013 appearance on Meet The Press. Two of the following segments are hosted by comedians; and yes, I reached to Rush Limbaugh to make a point about Noonan's recent criticism of an Obama public appearance. If you are or normal intellect , the relevant portion of the Limbaugh audio is the first 16 seconds only.

Before you visit either, each or all of the following links, let me remind, my point relates to hypocrisy, elitism, and subtle derangement. Noonan is in no position to direct Barack H. Obama, 44th President of the United States of America to stopping dropping his "g's" when speaking before certain audiences.

Reaganite Peggy Noonan says Obama shouldn’t be ‘dropping his g’s, slouching around’

By Arturo Garcia
Friday, August 1, 2014
Peggy Noonan speaks to CBS News

Conservative Wall Street Journal columnist Peggy Noonan made a bizarre reference to President Barack Obama’s grammar and posture on Thursday while accusing him of practicing divisive politics.

“He shouldn’t be at campaign-type rallies where he speaks only to the base, he should be speaking to the country,” she wrote. “He shouldn’t be out there dropping his g’s, slouching around a podium, complaining about his ill treatment, describing his opponents with disdain: ‘Stop just hatin’ all the time.’”

Noonan’s complaint referenced Obama’s speech on Wednesday in Kansas City, during which he made repeated requests for GOP lawmakers to “get some work done.” She did not mention that Obama made the speech hours before House Republicans pushed a bill through calling for them to sue Obama over changes to the Affordable Care Act.

All said, we recognize Noonan is paid handsomely to disparage "all things" Obama. Let's fold that point away as fact with no need to discuss farther. Let's probe Obama as public speaker with varied audiences outside the 92% white GOP and 75% Libertarian movement.

A few words about Obama, his adroit communication team, and public appearances.  Let's start with the fact Barack H. Obama was not raised from birth through Harvard Law School (and President of the Conservative Harvard Review), by people who can boost about offshore tax evading accounts. He has no roots in the Hamptons. He has never lived with guardians or parents who simultaneously owned homes.  Obama, has no record of owning multiple homes (e.g., Romney once own nine homes). His wife has never owned an Olympian horse and I have yet to read reports of the Obama's having on notice access to Yachts and private planes.  I assume that Obama attended public schools through highs school. He and Michelle Obama have comments about their student loans. He is a man of common lineage. Contrast the archetypal Noonan "tea-tipper" regarding paying student loans via the Mitt Romney life experience; one probably shared by Noonan: ".....borrow money (from college) from your parents." Link (relevant from the start of the clip through the 1:01 minute mark.)

Next point. As one who has taught public speaking, a key lesson is: know your audience, be audience centric and deliver your message for effect. All people in audiences bring a perspective to the speaking event that individually varies, but evolve around a common core: WIIFM (What is in it for me). Any individual WIIFM is influenced by acceptability of the speaker. Does the speaker connect with me,and if so how?  Watch as Obama speaks to varied audiences. Also noted his hand gestures and movements. Of particular interest is the fact, Obama would exhibit no such hand movements if speaking in Japan as that culture is not a culture of varied and sweepings hand movement while speaking.  Notice the direct and pointed finger of his favored hand (Obama is left handed). When speaking with Arabic or middle Eastern audiences he will use his hands for gestures that denote emphasis or key points. Gestures often absent when speaking public in other cultures.

The following video are for purpose of illustration. The video segments are not posted for full viewing as one segment is a full speech. We are seeking individual snippet validation of my posit: Obama makes no mistakes when developing a speech, preparing for a speech and delivering a speech. A secondary reason for the video gallery is to mock the inane babble of Noonan and her pointless criticism. Lots of work and time spent on the inane Noonan?

The propagandist has an easy burden: simple development of persuasive messages without regard for fact.  Countering the propagandist carries a heavier burden and it is important to spare no expense or fail to expend available resources (and energy) refuting the propagandist. Every successful propaganda message from the Right moves the nation farther back into the dark ages.

Skim through the following and recognize Nooan's drivel as such because there really isn't a lot available for criticism of President Obama.

Exhibit I.
Exhibit Ia.
Skip (only) through the first twelve minutes of the speech.  Watch the hands!

Exhibit II.
Obama speaking to an American audience (without teleprompter) with virtually no use of pointed finger and scant, if any, use of hand gestures. A very different audience with a more tempered and informational and formal message.
Exhibit III.
Obama Addresses the United Nations Assembly.  Formal speech style with hand gestures that appears pre-determined and planed, for a global assembly and audience with translation dynamics.  The epitome an speech making to a varied audience and with deep implications.
Exhibit IV.
Obama speaks to students about college affordability.  Notice the non-suit coat, very relaxed and exaggerated hand gestures for the "millennial" audience. Of course, he appears effective as far less than formal.  Skip through the first eight minutes only.
Exhibit V.
This week in Kansas City Missouri.  The speech that drew Noonan's elitist "tip tipping" criticism....... "stop dropping "g's" and "stop leaning."  Linked (stet at 5:26 minutes mark).  The full speech below (no need to view the full segment.) My point is easily viewed in the first five minutes.

And, my point is....the effective communicator develops his or her speech for each occasion. On what authority does the "stiff-necked"* Noonan possess and exercise criticism of a person who's oratory and communication style are enamored even among those foolish enough to harbor lower approval ratings? Maybe, the inimitable Noonan experienced a clairvoyant "fit" of this week's economic news?  Maybe, she knew her party congressionals would literally make fools of themselves twice this week and in consecutive days. In any case, and even if led into the criticism, her words denote a "Bridge Too Far" if she reached for cogent and relevant commentary.

Noonan should contemplate the following:

(Note: Internet terrorists attempted to inject male-ware upon my visiting the web page to secure the first image below.  How sad is the political Right?  It is a testament to American conservatism that someone would perform a malicious act against anyone seeking to view the page the page.)

President Obama does not take speaking engagements lightly.

Does Noonan actually failed to realize every public move from President  Obama is a move accompanied by anticipation of impact on the audience?  Obama is the consummate communicator. His audience is his immediate focus; his mission is the worldwide audience via split-second media transmission. We sought and found validation of Obama's speech prep, wrapped in a humorous video piece. A 1:56 minute video segment developed by Steven Spielberg shows the value Obama places on communication and various nuances of communication. The following is both humorous and revealing.  I could be wrong, but there appears to be editing of actual speech preparation mixed with outright humor for presentation at the 2013 Correspondent's Dinner.

Let's close on two notes, now that Noonan's inane drivel has been debunked. First point, if the economy was tanking and the ACA was a failure, the president wasn't seeing budget gains, the deficit wasn't slowly inching downward and her party was experiencing high approval ratings, Noonan could probably avoid such foolishness criticism.  Now, for the final point. I believe Noonan was earning millions via the WSJ and Sunday morning news contracts when these speeches took place.

Peggy Noonan Deflects From Income Inequity to ObamaCare! WOW!

"....did you know that the average CEO's pay is 1,039 times more generous than that of the average worker?

The conservative joins other conservatives in "WE DO NOT CARE."
ncwtv.com
After a while conservative pundit resistance to matters important to the nation becomes an indication of various cognitive abnormality and extreme insensitivity mixed with over-the-top short-shortsightedness.

Highly compensated pundits appear of the network and cable Sunday morning news talk shows as reliably as the 24 hour clock. A better analogy would be the likeness and reliability of conservative pundits (on Sunday morning) and their unyielding support for protecting the current tax structure; thus protecting the earnings power of the nation's Top 20 percent income earners. Earning power that contributed one such pundit' active  deflection this past Sunday.

Pundits like Peggy Noonan (in all of her splendid self-aggrandizing elitism), George Will (Fox News's newest propagandist) and Charles Krauthammer (Pulitzer-Prize winning demagogue), are contracted for appearances Sunday, after Sunday.
They offer constant feed for people who thrive on anti-Democratic/anti-Obama rhetoric and they do so with the most acute examples of stubbornness and zaniness imaginable. Their harm to the nation and efforts to provide a better life for allow Americans is suppressed only be the ridiculousness of networks who have the demagogues contracted each Seventh Day.

Media Matters published a detailed review of guest on the Sunday Morning shows. The review reflected results that shouldn't surprise.  Not only do certain networks book a preponderance of conservative guest, they almost exclusive book white males. The Media Matters review spanned the first three quarters  of 2013 (illustrated as September = Q3). Pay particular attention to the graphic illustration of Q3.

It is obvious the major networks booked pundits and surrogates to leverage viewership incited by the implementation of the "Affordable Care Act (ACA). The October 1, 2013 open enrollment date and complete and utter failure from the HHS (and the Administration) via providing a website tool to facilitate enrollment, was a literal gold mine for the graphed networks. How best to garner viewers, book guest who are dogmatic in their opposition to  the ACA?

Those same networks become booking bastions for white males in the very same manner the GOP reflects a 92% white membership. The Libertarian Party reflects similar racial demographics.
Both parties/political ideology are also as male dominant as conservative and GOP ideology and practice as exemplified by the ongoing GOP War on Women. A War on women that focuses almost exclusively on unmarried, younger (than aged 50) women. We shudder to think of why married older women march in "lock-step" with their husbands in obvious indifference to equal rights for women (i.e., equal pay, health services for the child bearing women, unemployment payments etc.). We actually know why the dynamics exists, but do not care to pursue our opine in this screed.

We Digress! The real danger in Network facilitation of right-wing ideology strikes at teh core of out future.

Over this past weekend CBS occupied a seat with one of the most pompous right-wing pundits alive: Peggy Noonan. CBS broke the predominance of white males, but got the very same twisted right-wing dogma as that spewed by dominate party white males.  It is important to note, Noonan earns a hefty paycheck from the Ruppert Murdoch owned Wall Street Journal. Therefore, we should expect no less than delivery of extreme Right dogma for the CBS audience.

We offer one additional fact, before moving to the inimitable Noonan. Since, Noonan posited about income disparity/inequity (an Obama 2014 focus and a sure State of the Union Speech item) as a strategy to take the nation away from the failures of "ObamaCare."

Well......
https://www.facebook.com/hashtag/getcovered
Noonan spews "hopeful" Right-wing anti-ACA talking points embodied in one (without any credible basis) statement.

While we certainly cannot assume the ACA( AKA ObamaCare) will not suffer reality setbacks in 2014. We posit the Administration has dealt effectively with setback since October 1, 2013, and we assume any glitches will be address similarly).  How can pundits like Noonan secure air-time to spew pure hopeful rhetoric without counter probing for details vs. GOP "playbook" Mantra? Why can't host ask about the nine million (reported) benefactors of the law? Why can't a host try this, "What happens to the medical coverage fore nine million reported ACA benefactors?" Now, how hard was that? Put them on the spot vs. providing a ideology platform that cannot help, but influence minds.

Media Matters...
Noonan responded to host Bob Schieffer's question about why Democrats were focusing on income inequality and increasing the minimum wage by claiming that they "need to change the subject" away from Obamacare:

NOONAN: [Obama] does not want to talk about Obamacare. It is widely assumed that in 2014 the bad news of Obamacare, the dislocations, the lost coverage, the price hikes, the premium hikes, et cetera, et cetera, that all of this will continue. It's not the website. The website is the old story. It is the program. It will unveil over the next two years and it's going to be problematic. The president does not want to talk about it. The Democrats do not want to talk about it. Therefore,  income equality, minimum wage, et cetera, et cetera. They need to change the subject.

Noonan also dropped a bomb via labeling newly elected Mayor of New York a Sandanista. While, she quickly attempted to rephrase the remark, I have little doubt the mission was accomplished. You can rest assured her words will surface in right-wings memes, websites and probably some host of Fox will share the B/S.

We should not expect better from Noonan regarding incommode inequity. she served in the Reagan Administrations, we we suspect remains dogmatic about "trickle-down" economics.

Maybe, Noonan,s lack of regard for the less economically privileged has deep conservative roots. the real question is how can CBS continue to pay her a hefty paycheck to show-up on Sundays with GOP 'playbook"; B/S that literally makes no sense at all. On top of her flawed punditry, viewers are forced to tolerate her over-the-top pompous non-verbal demeanor.

Reagan's "Trickle-down"...did not trickle! Noonan was there!

Noonan was there!

How crass to deflect from income inequity at a time when her party is denying unemployment payments to millions?

Income inequity...

CNN 2010 segment 1:00 minute: Linked

RT Network 2010 segment 5:26 minutes: Linked

We linked the two links above due solely to the timing of the broadcast. Obama has only just begun to speak about income inequity. We suggest the two links and Noonan's inane deflection (to OBamaCare) reflects the shallowness of counter progressive arguments from the Right.

Surely Noonan is aware of The Stanford Center for the Study of Poverty and Inequality study. The following infographic--by Kristy Tillman for Objects in Repeat--explains 15 different facts about American inequality that might tweak your worldview a little.

Larger Version: Linked (CLICK again image after large version)

CBS should seriously consider re-formatting its revenue model to include credible sources of information and credible pundits (or more balanced pundits) for sharing information critical to the nation's economic and social health. Simply booking guest to spew GOP ideology or guest to refute the GOP demagogues may garner revenue, but falls well shy of journalistic social responsibility.

We would not expect Noonan in any way to agree to intelligently discuss income inequity (Or for that matter national healthcare), but we should expect surface efforts to deflect from a critical issue would be mitigated.  Bob Schieffer's responses to Noonan were proper journalistic probing and retort, but even he pulled-up shy of fully challenging the propagandist. If challenged with demeanor and comment denoting pundit lunacy, these people will restrict their insanity to Fox News, and the new CNN.

Peggy Noonan Called-Out For Attack On De Blasio

Peggy Noonan: Punditry Gone Rancid! Jon Stewart On Noonan (Video)

Ms. Sunday Morning Peggy Noonan has yet again given us a reminder of the failings of her punditry. Sunday Morning News shows have long provided viewing I can do without. Yet, I find myself sticking on NBC, ABC, or CBS for a few errant minutes some Sundays.

I literally cringe every time something in me forces watching either of the news shows. It is like knowing I should not scratch that scab off the nasty scratch on my arm.  You know it is not the right thing to do, but you do it anyway.

First, network television Sunday morning news shows are the unquestioned domain of the socio/political Right. NBC placed "Mr. Conservative" David Gregory squarely in a seat vacated via the premature death of Tim Russert. George will is as much a fixture on Sundays as Peggy Noonan.  NBC more than frequently books Peggy Noonan. Even minutes of viewing (watching and listening) Noonan,  I suffer what can be described as crawling epidermis.

Anyone who views the pundit expects a conservative performance that not only satisfies those with Obama Derangement Syndrome, the viewer gets much more. Her performances also entertain those who may relish unbridled pompousness and gloating elitism. She visits the set with what appears pre-rehearsed non-verbals, strategic hair flipping, and facial expression fit for a person in need of a laxative. She is over-the-top demonstrative to the point of appearing self-aggrandizing.

Let's face it television is a visual media well before it is an auditory media. You have to look the part, correct?   Now for an example of punditry gone absolutely mad. Noonan's posit in the embedded is based on a piece she wrote about the 2011 debt ceiling debacle. As you watch the over-the-top exhibition with contrived demeanor, think about the 2011 debt ceiling battle. It was the very debt battle that led to Standard and Poor's lowering the US Credit Rating to Double AA (down from AAA). It was the debacle after which Boehner proclaimed "I got 98% of what I wanted."  It was the battle during which President Obama stood-up for not giving-in to cuts to entitlement programs and social services while asking for a meager increase in tax revenue. Yet, then and now we have Republicans practicing their consistent talking point of: "The president does not lead."  Watch as Noonan provided her rendition of "he does not lead."

While it is a dated exhibition, it serves well in showing the competency of Noonan's punditry. The pundit gloated and piled it on as President Obama stood tall for the lower and middle income strata while seeking a tax increase.

Pundits are booked on news shows based on their abilities to opine and to partake in oral exchanges with point-retort-counterpoint dynamics. I cannot recall a pundit who fails at that set of skills regardless of Left or Right lean. Of course, I exclude Sarah Palin as I used the words "point-retort-counterpoint." Palin is a Fox News whine her up and let her talk. Give her a three minute introductory-quasi question and have a cup of coffee while she spills drivel across the airways. So, let's exclude the former Governor of Alaska. It was Alaska was it not?

Noonan is supposedly competent at a much more visceral level, despite being frequently way off-base in her on-air opining. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) writer recently posted on the Syria debate in the United States. One would think, a pundit who writes for Murdoch's WSJ, and who is on Sunday News shows almost weekly, would be much more conscience of the state of war in Syria. Note the highlighted sentence in the following embed.
Embedded image permalink
How could the pundit not have total mastery of the fact the war in Syria has been underway for two years and is a "civil war."

In 2008, Noonan showed her mantle with an obviously contrived and phony analysis as she declared Palin as winner of the Vice Presidential Debate. Factually, Palin's performance was sad and pathetic. Noonan went oozy from the moment Palin stepped out on stage. Is that the level of shallowness one should expect from a highly compensated right-wing pundit? Well, yes it is exactly since her mission was to laud all things conservative throughout the campaign.

Watch Palin's shallowness, pre-programmed and phony. Lest we forget sexist performance! Is it playing-up one's gender to eye-wink in a national debate? What from Palin and her handlers would lead to the placing their perception of Palin as "cute" and sexy (eye-winks) over qualified and competent for high office.  OK, If her look is (was) your preference, then help me belatedly understand the significance of an obvious gender based ploy in a critical campaign debate?   Actually, it was crass and disappointingly shallow.  Yet, another quick look at stupid and shallow.

Let's place Noonan's Palin debate oozing in perspective to complete ejaculation from Pat Buchanan.  "The most attractive candidate out there."  What???? Fortunately, we did not suffer the horror of Sarah Palin and John McCain within operational distance of the White House, so Buchanan's "attractive," was as irrelevant as it was a shallow manifestation of his aged libido.

As we considered Palin's contribution to the campaign ticket over the long haul it is easy to recognize fallacy of Noonan's punditry. Palin was without doubt the most incompetent candidate for high political office ever. Yet, both Noonan and Buchanan fulfilled their roles without flinching.
